Antwerp: A City Built by a Giant’s Hands
Antwerp, the diamond center of the world, is that and so much more. This beautiful old world Belgium city is the center of Europe’s diamond trade and a fabulous place for lovers of art and architecture. Antwerp flourished during both the medieval and Renaissance periods and the buildings and monuments of the city reflect it’s success. Today the city is a hip and trendy destination for the modern traveler.
Visitors to Antwerp will find a wonderful art museum with many pieces representing the Flemish masters, an ancient cathedral, and a downtown consisting of medieval avenues and buildings. But don’t be fooled into thinking that the old and ancient are all Antwerp has on tap. This city is home to many chic restaurants and bars for those looking for exciting nightlife.
The city of Antwerp is home to the famous painting master, Rubens. Visitors will find many of his works in the Antwerp museum. Rubens became so well known for his painting style that he is considered the best of the Flemish masters and many women and painting styles are still referred to as Rubensesque.
A wonderful legend developed around the naming and founding of the city. Local lore tells of a giant named Druon Antigon who required large payments from boats attempting to pass his castle. Those who could not pay lost their hand to the Giant’s sword; the hand thrown into the river. The giant was finally defeated and had his own hand cut off and thrown into the river. Handwerpen, Flemish for throwing of the hand, was eventually contorted into Antwerp.
Visitors to the city known for the throwing of the hand will find replicas of the giants hand everywhere. Many souvenirs reflect the local legend of Druon Antigon. While the legend has never been proved true, it is a wonderful introduction to a vibrant and historical city.
